Border Patrol Agent Admits To Intentionally Hitting Migrant With Truck

Matthew Bowen, an Arizona Border Patrol agent, intentionally slammed a Guatemalan man with his truck.

Arizona Border Patrol agent Matthew Bowen, 39, admitted to intentionally hitting a Guatemalan man with his truck. According to Yahoo, Bowen could pay up to $10,000 in fines and could serve a year in prison.

Bowen was charged for hitting the undocumented immigrant, Antolin Lopez Aguilar, 23, with his Border Patrol truck. Bowen then appears to have falsified the report about the ‘accident.’ He was indefinitely suspended after the indictment, and as part of a plea deal, he resigned from U.S. Border Patrol.

Prosecutors say that Bowen came “within inches of running Lopez-Aguilar over.”

Bowen was also criticized for sending racist text messages concerning migrants. In the texts, he said migrants were “disgusting subhuman shit” and “mindless murdering savages.”

In defending him, Bowen’s attorney said that that type of language was “commonplace throughout the Border Patrol’s Tuscon Sector, that it is part of the agency’s culture.”

Bowen said he “intentionally” hit the man with his truck.

“During my apprehension of [Lopez-Aguilar], I intentionally struck him with an unreasonable amount of force. My actions ... were not justified and violated his rights protected by the Constitution of the United States,” Bowen said.

He will be sentenced on October 15.
