Biden is Signing These 10 Executive Orders to Combat the Pandemic
President Biden wants to ramp up the federal government's response to the pandemic. “The National Strategy provides a roadmap to guide America out of the worst public health crisis in a century,” the plan says. “America has always risen to the challenge we face and we will do so now.”Following are the executive orders Biden plans to sign his first two days in office:
Biden signed an executive order requiring masks on federal property. He also called on governors and other officials to encourage mask-wearing and social distancing.
Biden signed an executive order requiring masks on public transportation such as trains, busses and aircraft. International travelers will be required to test negative for COVID-19 before entering the US and will have to quarantine upon arrival.
Biden signed an executive order, called “A Sustainable Public Health Supply Chain.” This piece of legislation hopes to increase supplies needed to combat the pandemic such as vaccine supplies. “It’s past time to fix America’s COVID-response supply shortage problems for good,” it says.
State and local support
This executive order provides additional funding for state and local government. Biden hopes that this additional funding will lead to more vaccination sites. Biden previously stated that his administration hopes to administer 100 million vaccine shots in the first 100 days. “We feel confident that we can meet our 100 million shots in 100 days,” Zients said. “But that is really just the start of where we need to be. We have to vaccinate as much of the U.S. population as possible to put this pandemic behind us, but we don’t have the infrastructure.”
Covid response office
Biden's "COVID-19 Response Office,” aims to provide clear channels of communication regarding COVID-19 information.
Biden's “Improving and Expanding Access to Care and Treatment for COVID-19,” aims to research other COVID-19 treatments such as Gilead's remdesivir.
“To control the COVID-19 pandemic and safely reopen schools and businesses, America must have wide-spread testing,” the plan says.
Reopening schools and businesses
Biden has been vocal about his plans to reopen schools and businesses as soon as possible. This executive order directs the Department of Health and Human Services to collect data on school reopenings and the spread of Covid.
Biden is establishing a "COVID-19 Health Equity Task Force" that will ensure vaccines, treatments, masks, and other resources. “We need the money from Congress to fund the national strategy,” Zients said.
