Be Best? Melania Is Just As Much Of A Bully As Her Husband
First Lady Melania Trump was ridiculed after announcing her pet project would involve encouraging children to “Be Best” and shy away from cyberbullying, given her husband’s penchant for berating others on social media, among other forums.
But the First Lady herself is no angel when it comes to bullying others.
In 2017, Teen Vogue reported that Melania supported President Donald Trump’s claims that former President Barack Obama was not born in the United States.
"It’s not only Donald who wants to see [Obama's birth certificate], it’s American people who voted for him and who didn’t vote for him. They want to see that," Melania said at the time, arguing that the document Obama released was “different than birth certificate.”
In 2018, Melania stood behind her husband as he declared to reporters that he did not owe an apology to Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) for mocking her over her Native American claims.
Melania smiled as Trump continued mocking Warren during the press conference.
And in 2019, Melania suggested that teen climate change activist Greta Thunberg was fair game for attacks by her husband because she has put herself in the public sphere.
The president attacked Thunberg for winning TIME’s Person of the Year award.
“Melania Trump previously rebuked law professor Pamela Karlan for mentioning Barron, 13, during an impeachment hearing before the House Judiciary Committee,” Newsweek reported at the time.
In a statement, Melania’s office said: "BeBest is the First Lady's initiative, and she will continue to use it to do all she can to help children. It is no secret that the President and First Lady often communicate differently -- as most married couples do."
