Anti-LGBT Australian politician Bob Katter, who previously achieved internet fame with his comments on gay marriage and crocodile attacks, is back in the headlines again. This time he is arguing that gay people came into existence 60 years ago.
[Katter] claimed that LGBTI people are going against their "genetic programming": "The people advocating this proposition tonight, the LGBTIs, have maybe 60 years on their side. I have 3.5 million years of genetic programming on my side, because we human beings, they tell us, have been around for 3.5 million years."
Katter went on to make multiple dubious statements during his speech on the chamber floor:
- He implied a link between Australia's high rate of juvenile male suicide and what he termed an "extraordinary incidence of homosexual behavior."
- He claimed that young boys were forced by the education department to wear dresses to school, which was demonstrably false.
- He insisted that homosexual men demanded the right to give blood, leading to children being injected "with AIDS."
Liberal MP and longtime LGBTI equality advocate Warren Entsch summed up Katter's speech as such:
"His pathetic attempts of humour, insensitivity, grossly misleading comments were devoid of any facts and were highly offensive, embarrassing, and cringeworthy," Entsch said. "They need to be called out for what they are. His speech exemplifies what the LGBTI community have had to endure for so long."
