Trump rallies are notoriously rowdy, often filled with “lock her up” chants and boos whenever the president talks about his political opponents.
But an audience member at a May rally in the Florida Panhandle suggested that the president “shoot” migrants, New York’s The Daily Intelligencer reports.
“You have hundreds and hundreds of [migrants] and you have two or three border security people that are brave and great — and don’t forget, we don’t let them and we can’t let them use weapons,” Trump told the crowd. “We can’t. Other countries do. We can’t, I would never do that. But how do you stop these people?”
And that’s when the audience member yelled: “Shoot them!”
The president and the sea of supporters proceeded to laugh.
“Only in the panhandle can you get away with that statement,” Trump replied, understanding the violent remark as just a joke.
Trump’s passive endorsement of violence toward migrants comes only days after a self-proclaimed border militia member reportedly asked why “we” aren’t “lining them up and shooting them?”
“We have to go back to Hitler days and put them all in a gas chamber,” the man identified as Armando Delgado Gonzalez said while monitoring the border.
