New York Democrat and Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez slammed conservative lawmakers and the New York Post for allegedly provoking violence against fellow progressive House member and Minnesota Representative Ilhan Omar, Bloomberg reports.
During a House Democrat retreat in Leesburg, Virginia, Ocasio-Cortez accused the New York Post of endangering her colleague with a front page article on Thursday that criticized her remarks about 9/11.
The cover referenced Omar's recent comments to the Council on American-Islamic Relations, when she said that the group was created "because they recognized that some people did something” during the September 11 terrorist attacks. The New York Post cover printed a large image of the Twin Towers burning with the headline, "Here's your something."
“We are getting to the point where this is incitement of violence against progressive women of color,” Ocasio-Cortez said to reporters. “If they can’t figure out how to get it back to policy, we need to call it out for what it is. This is not normal, this is not a normal level of political debate or rhetoric.”
In a tweet on Wednesday, Ocasio-Cortez criticized an email written by Ohio College Republicans calling her a "domestic terrorist," saying that it endangered her wellbeing.
“Almost every time this uncalled for rhetoric gets blasted by conserv. grps, we get a spike in death threats to refer to Capitol Police. Multiple ppl have been arrested trying to harm me, Ilhan, & others. @GOP, what’s it going to take to stop?” she wrote in her Twitter post.
