The day after former Defense Secretary William Cohen said President Donald Trump “has taken a wrecking ball to every pillar of stability and security” and is unfit for the office, another official to have held the position spoke out in agreement.
Chuck Hagel, who served as defense secretary under President Barack Obama, told CNN’s Jake Tapper on Friday that Trump is "not equipped on any level to be President of the United States."
“[Trump] has never understood government, politics...our government is not a one-man show,” Hagel said. “You can’t run this like a real estate business, or any other business. This is not entertainment.”
He also said the country cannot be run by dividing the people and having “constant conflict”, but Hagel said Trump does not understand this.
“I think Bill Cohen was right,” Hagel told Tapper. “He’s just not equipped on any level to be President of the United States. But he is president.”
On Thursday, after Trump’s Defense Secretary Jim Mattis announced his resignation earlier in the day, Cohen told CNN that the president is not fit to serve and is actively destroying decades of work on security and stability.
“The president has taken a wrecking ball to every pillar of stability and security we have erected over the past 60 to 70 years.”
Cohen spoke on the chaos that has been caused by the president’s decisions surrounding Syria and Afghanistan. He cited these decisions as going against Mattis belief in maintaining a reputation of credibility and reliability with the nation’s allies and for causing Mattis to resign.
