Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich was “disgusted and insulted” by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s decision to tear up her copy of President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address for all the world to see on Tuesday night.
Fox News reported that Gingrich tweeted of Pelosi’s actions: “As Speaker of the House for four State of the Unions by a President of the other party I am disgusted and insulted by the viciously partisan action of Nancy Pelosi tearing up the speech. She isn’t clever or cute her childishness insults our American traditions -should be censured.”
The news outlet noted that others were also offended by Pelosi’s move — which she defended by saying she tore it up because she “was trying to find one page with truth on it” and couldn’t — including former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley, House minority whip Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA), and the White House.
But others on Twitter praised Pelosi’s move, noting that Gingrich seemed to have “zero self-awareness” when it comes to showing or demanding respect for a sitting president — for example, like the time he suggested that former President Barack Obama was engaged in “Kenyan, anti-colonial behavior.”
Well before the speech-ripping scene, tension between Trump and Pelosi was noticeable when the President appeared to ignore the Speaker’s offer of a handshake as he delivered copies of his address to both Pelosi and Vice President Mike Pence.
