Virginia GOP Candidate Suggests ‘Ankle Bracelets’ For Women Who Get Abortions
GOP Candidate: Ankle Monitors for Pregnant Women to Prevent Abortion
During a debate in Sterling, VA last week, Republican Delegate Candidate Bill Drennan, running in Virginia's 87th Delegate District against Democrat Suhas Su...
A Republican candidate for Virginia’s state House apparently suggested that women who terminate their pregnancies should be forced to wear ankle bracelets, according to Right Wing Watch.
Bill Drennan reportedly brought up the issue as he railed against “common-sense” gun legislation, which he claims go against the Constitution’s right to bear arms.
“The number of abortions in Virginia in 2017 was 17,210. The number of gun deaths, the misuse of guns, was 1,041. That’s a ratio of 16.5 to 1,” Drennan said. “How about this, contrarian? I’m going to impose commonsense restrictions on the constitutional right to an abortion? How about ankle bracelets? I don’t think very many people would agree with this.”
Asked at the same forum, hosted by Northern Virginia Community College and presented by the League of Women Voters of Loudoun County, whether he supports the Equal Rights Amendment, Drennan would not provide his opinion.
The ERA would guarantee the rights of all Americans, regardless of sex, but after decades, the amendment still has not been ratified by enough states to become the 28th Amendment to the Constitution.
“The ERA has been dead for 37 years, so I don’t know how to respond to whether I support it or not,” Drennan said. “I do not support dead legislation.”
