Republican Gov. Phil Scott of Vermont signed a bill that protects women’s access to abortion services in the state.

Vermont Governor Phill Scott, a Republican, signed a bill on Monday protecting women’s access to abortion services, according to The Associated Press.

In a statement released after the bill's signing, Scott said his support for women's reproductive rights has been consistent, adding, "I know this issue can be polarizing, so I appreciate the respectful tone and civility from all sides throughout this discussion."

The bill he signed is separate from a measure that would amend to Vermont constitution to guarantee women’s abortion rights. Supporters say that both measures are needed to protect abortion in Vermont in case the Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade.
