Texas Republican Calls For Women To Be Prosecuted For Having Abortions
Representative Ron Wright (R-TX) argued that women should be punished with jail time for having an abortion in a video released by pro-choice advocacy group Reproaction, according to HuffPost.
Wright claims he holds similar views on abortion as other Republican legislators, yet believes that women should be imprisoned if they undergo the procedure. “As far as I’m concerned, they committed murder,” Wright added.
Wright isn’t the only Republican arguing that women should be prosecuted for having an abortion.
Texas state Rep. Tony Tinderholt proposed a bill that would ban “abortion and [subject] women and their doctors to the death penalty” regardless of “rape, incest, or fetal abnormalities.”
Wright, who was elected to Congress in 2018, has a history in denouncing Planned Parenthood.
The Republican attempted to persuade Tarrant County, Texas employees not to make donations to the nonprofit organization United Way because of its apparent ties to Planned Parenthood in 2015.
NARAL Pro Choice Texas Executive Director Aimee Arrambide believes that “North Texans deserve better”.
