OREGON MAN CONVICTED OF “REVENGE PORN” HAS PRISON SENTENCE QUINTUPLED

Benjamin Barber was convicted of distributing sexually explicit videos of his ex-girlfriend without her consent. His conviction was the result of the first prosecution for “revenge porn” in the state of Oregon.

According to Oregon Live:

According to court records, Barber uploaded four pornographic videos of himself and his ex-girlfriend to nine porn websites. A Washington County prosecutor said the videos were taken while the two were a couple, but they were no longer together when the videos were uploaded.

Barber told The Oregonian/OregonLive hours after his sentencing that he uploaded the videos and disseminated other files because he was contemplating suicide and wanted to “memorialize all the things I had done.” He said he believed he owned the copyright to the videos and that he had the legal authority to publish them.”

Washington County Circuit Judge Beth Roberts originally sentenced Mr. Barber to six months in prison. Following his conviction, Mr. Barber went on the lam and was only recently apprehended.

Following Mr. Barber’s recent arrest, Judge Roberts added an additional 24 months to his original sentence. The additional time in prison will be served consecutively after he has finished his original sentence six-month sentence.

Following his release from prison, Mr. Barber will be on probation for five years.
