U.S. Women’s National Team Wins World Cup, and Nike Becomes Big Winner

Nike sold the women’s team shirts in men’s sizes, and not surprisingly, jersey sales almost doubled.

Nike capitalized on the USWNT win at the 2019 Women’s World Cup and became a big winner, as their website sold more USA women’s jerseys this season than it has of any other soccer team’s shirt, according to Business Insider.

The USWNT won the Women’s World Cup against the Netherlands 2-0 on Sunday.

The sports apparel retailer saw a huge increase in demand for tournament jerseys this year. Combined with the demand for French, English, Brazilian, and Nigerian women’s team shirts, sales for tournament jerseys more than tripled compared to the last Women’s World Cup in 2015.

When countries began offering the women’s jersey designs in men’s sizes, sales nearly doubled.

Business Insider noted that the sales were surprising “given the tournament’s divisiveness”. They were referring to forward Megan Rapinoe’s statement that she would reject an invite to the White House to which President Donald Trump responded with a tweet that said she should win the tournament before talking.
