Here are the main market catalysts and closing values for the major US indexes on Thursday, July 16, 2020.

All of the major US indexes closed with significant losses on Thursday, according to CNBC.

  • The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 135.39 points, or 0.50 percent, to close at 26,734.71.
  • The S&P 500 lost 0.34 percent to close at 3,215.57.
  • The Nasdaq Composite lost 0.73 percent to close at 10,473.83.

Big tech continued to give back from its previous rally. Microsoft shares lost 1.98 percent, Apple lost 1.23 percent, while Facebook and Amazon broke even. Netflix rose 0.79 percent ahead of its earnings release, which was disappointing, and shares dipped after hours.

Investors were disappointed by a higher-than-expected number of jobless claims. Early Thursday, the Labor Department reported that 1.3 million Americans filed for unemployment last week. Economists were expecting 1.25 million claims.

On the bright side, retail sales increased 7.5 percent in June, beating the expected 5.2 percent.

Tomorrow, consumer sentiment data and BlackRock earnings will be released.
