T-Mobile Explains This Week's Massive United States Service Outage
T-Mobile announced that a fiber circuit failure in the Southeast led to the recent United States outage that disrupted service across the nation, according to Business Insider.
T-Mobile’s president of technology, Neville Ray, took to a blog post on Tuesday to speak on the matter, stating, “Our engineers worked through the night to understand the root cause of yesterday's issues, address it and prevent it from happening again. The trigger event is known to be a leased fiber circuit failure from a third-party provider in the Southeast.”
Ray spoke of an “overload situation” when describing a failure of T-Mobile’s safeguards. Capacity issues resulted from an “IP traffic storm” from the Southeast. Ray added that he is “continuing to work on determining the cause of the initial overload failure” and plans to “add permanent additional safeguards to prevent this from happening again.”
Following Monday’s afternoon and evening outages, T-Mobile repaired its network around 1 a.m. ET on Tuesday. Website Downdetector reported more than 93,000 network issue reports at around 3 p.m. on Monday. While other carriers’ customers also reported some network problems, Downdetector reported that AT&T and Verizon were fully functioning. Ray stated that Sprint networks remained unharmed.
Federal Communications Commission chairman Ajit Pai took to Twitter to call the outage “unacceptable,” and announced an FCC investigation on the matter. In his tweet, Pai wrote, “We’re demanding answers-and so are American customers.”
