Reddit Co-Founder Gives Up Board Seat and Asks to Be Replaced by Black Candidate
Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian announced his resignation from the company's board on Friday and requested that a black candidate fill his role, according to Forbes.
In addition to his resignation, Ohanian will:
- donate future gains on Reddit stock to the black community
- donate $1 million to Colin Kaepernick's Know Your Rights Camp
Reddit's board of directors is comprised of three men and one woman, who are all white. The company released a statement earlier this week stating that it had a lot of work to do involving fighting racism and violence on its page.
CEO Steve Huffman promised to fill Ohanian's board seat with a black candidate and update the company's rules regarding content that is racist or hateful.
Ohanian posted a video explaining his motive. “I’m saying this as a father who needs to be able to answer his black daughter when she asks, what did you do?” Ohanian is married to tennis legend Serena Williams.
Most corporations in the US have released statements condemning racism and inequality in the United States.
Ohanian has made a phenomenal contribution to the Black Lives Matter movement so that we can reform our country to truly be the land of the free and home of the brave.
