Dr. Mariana Mazzucato is an economist at University College London is changing the way society views economic value and defending capitalism in the process, according to The New York Times.
Dr. Mazzucato has written two books on modern political-economic theory, "The Entrepreneurial State" and "The Value of Everything." In her books, she argues that the public sector has created wealth in unison with the private sector. For example, the internet, iPhone, and clean energy were funded by public dollars.
Dr. Mazzucato believes that the state has been an underappreciated catalyst in producing wealth. “Personally, I think the left is losing around the world,” she said, “because they focus too much on redistribution and not enough on the creation of wealth.”
Republicans and Democrats have both incorporated some of Dr. Mazzucato's beliefs into their own political beliefs. Democratic Presidential Candidate Elizabeth Warren announced one policy using “federal R & D to create domestic jobs and sustainable investments in the future.”
Republican Senator Marco Rubio gave Dr. Mazzucato credit in his proposal to rekindle economic growth, "American Investment in the 21st Century."
