LeBron James is forming a voting right organization to combat voter suppression, according to Forbes.

The group is called More Than a Vote and was formed by not only James but other prominent Black athletes and entertainers. “Because of everything that’s going on, people are finally starting to listen to us — we feel like we’re finally getting a foot in the door,” James said. “How long is up to us. We don’t know. But we feel like we’re getting some ears and some attention, and this is the time for us to finally make a difference.”

James and Maverick Carter are funding the group. NBA players Trae Young, Draymond Green, and Jalen Rose are involved with the group. Comedian Kevin Hart and Saints running back Alvin Kamara are also joining the group. Global protests against police violence sparked by the murder of George Floyd have contributed to these initiatives. The global protests have proven how effective unrelenting campaigns can be. Multiple mayors have promised to reduce police budgets, possibly reallocating funding to social programs.

LeBron has more around 137 million followers on his social media accounts. For perspective, 136 million people voted int he 2016 election. Congress has also responded to the protests. Last week, House Democrats proposed police reform legislation. Republicans have promised their own form of legislation to reform the police system. LeBron can use his platform to help combat voter suppression, specifically for minorities.

Mail-in voting has been highly controversial for many lawmakers. President Donald Trump votes by mail, but stated that he did not support mail-in voting because he believes Republicans would "never" be elected again if the option was increased.

LeBron wants to change that.“Yes, we want you to go out and vote, but we’re also going to give you the tutorial,” James told the NYT. “We’re going to give you the background of how to vote and what they’re trying to do, the other side, to stop you from voting.”
