The trade deal was thrown into question both by the pandemic and remarks made earlier by President Trump, according to Mena Fn.

When asked about the trade deal Trump has pivoted away from discussing Chinese trade relations or has expressed that he is considering breaking ties with China. However, White House Economic Advisor, Larry Kudlow has emphasized that the first phase of the trade deal is still moving forward.

“We have other issues with China, and of course the origin of the virus... but with respect to the trade deal, it is continuing, absolutely”, Larry Kudlow said.

Adhering to the first phase would be welcome progress towards defusing an 18 month trade war between the U.S. and China. Part of the trade deal includes that China increase purchases of farm goods, manufactured products, energy and services from the U.S. by $200 billion over the next two years. However, increases in purchases have not progressed as quickly as expected due to the economic halt brought on by the coronavirus.
