The money will be distributed through the Bezos Earth Fund. $10 billion accounts for about 7.7% of his wealth. Jeff Bezos is the richest person on earth and the founder of Amazon. Grants from the fund are expected to be distributed as early as this summer.
"Climate change is the biggest threat to our planet," Bezos said. "I want to work alongside others both to amplify known ways and to explore new ways of fighting the devastating impact of climate change on this planet we all share."
Additionally, Bezos has faced pressure from his employees to implement more environmentally friendly practices throughout Amazon. More specifically, over 350 employees signed an online petition demanding that Amazon achieve net-zero emissions by 2030.
Amazon has rolled out a pledge to be more environmentally friendly. Within this pledge is the goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2040. Other pledges include operating solely on 100% renewable energy by 2030 and relying on a fleet of 100,000 electric delivery vehicles by 2030.
