Former San Francisco 49ers quarterback and activist Colin Kaepernick has joined the board of directors of online publishing platform Medium, according to Tech Crunch.

Kaepernick established his own publishing company in 2019, Kaepernick Publishing. Now, Medium has partnered with Kaepernick Publishing in an effort to create more projects regarding race and civil rights in the United States.

Chief executive of Medium, Ev Williams said, “We’ve been in talks with Colin for some time, and we are honored to be electing him to join our board. Colin’s voice and actions have led the discussion on racial justice, and the world is finally catching up to him.”

Medium’s Level, a blog they describe as for the “interested man,” and Momentum, a blog focusing on anti-Black racism and civil rights, will be publishing stories and features from Kaepernick. The famous activist plans on interviewing officials, athletes, and other activists for Medium.

In a statement, Kaepernick said, “I am excited for Kaepernick Publishing to partner with Medium to continue to elevate Black voices in the news and publishing industry. I also look forward to creating new opportunities and avenues for Black writers and creators with my new role as a Board member.”

As of now, Medium has 170 million monthly readers.
