BioReference Labs Will Conduct Testing for All 32 Teams
The NFL announced that BioReference Laboratories to handle coronavirus testing for the league this year, according to CNBC.
BioReference Laboratories is a private diagnostics company. “I am not going to discuss the specifics of our relationship right now with the NFL,” Executive Chairman Dr. Jon Cohen said. “I will confirm for you that we are the tester. We will be testing all 32 teams in 30 different cities around the country.”
BioReference has now secured its third professional sports contract in one month. The lab will also provide coronavirus testing for the NBA and MLS. The company will conduct virus and antibody testing. The NFL Management Council on Monday laid out the screening and testing protocol for training camp and the preseason. The NFL Players Association approved the guidelines.
The guidelines state that players must be tested for COVID-19 twice before entering facilities. Players will be tested on day one and day four and will have to quarantine at home or in a hotel in-between. Players that test negative on day 4 will be allowed to enter facilities on day 5.
NFL employees are being grouped into multiple tiers. Individuals in the first two tiers will be tested regularly for COVID-19. Individuals in tier 1 will be made up of players and personnel. Tier 2 includes other essential personnel. Tier 2M and Tier 3 are the remaining categories.
Training camp for the league is expected to start on July 28. Only 20 players at a time will be allowed in team facilities.
The NFL preseason is scheduled to start on August 13.
