Catholic Cardinal Says Sexual Abuse Victims Should Be “Ashamed” Of Themselves

Cardinal Sergio Obeso Rivera said some accusers should be "ashamed" because of the skeletons in their own closets.

While many officials in the Catholic church are promising there will be no more sex abuse cover-ups and have assured the world they are treating the issue with paramount concern, one Cardinal in Mexico says some abuse victims should be “ashamed” to level accusations due to having skeletons in their own closets.

Via Crux:

The victims of pedophilia who “accuse men of the Church should [be careful] because they have long tails that are easily stepped on,” said Cardinal Sergio Obeso Rivera.

The cardinal, emeritus Archbishop of Xalapa, in Veracruz, Mexico, spoke to journalists before a celebration he led in his former diocese.

Obeso Rivera granted that some allegations of abuse are true, but rather than address the abuse, he opted to attack the accusers.

“I’m here happy to talk about nice things, not about problematic things, it’s an accusation that is made, and in some cases it’s true. But the evil of many is the consolation of fools, because sometimes those who accuse men of the Church should [be careful] because they have long tails that are easily stepped on.”

However, he did say that the accusations “make us feel bad and we want to improve.”

Mexico is the home of Father Marcial Maciel Degollado, founder of the Legionaries of Christ, who was found guilty by the Vatican of having sexually abused minors and young men. After his death, it was also revealed that he had maintained relationships with at least two women, fathering more than one child.

He is suggesting that some have themselves become sexual predators. But that would not have happened had they not been abused.

He is seemingly an arrogant threatening thug wanna be who would fail at any real vocation in the world. The pastoral ineptitude of the RCC is legendary, he is a poster child and l do mean child. As so many may believe god sent them an opportunity to go "point" on this problem which they have whined considerably about being targets and general population has similar numbers of child predators BUT no. The RCC by casual conservative figures has a 9% child predator rate. General pop 1.5%. This failure of a human ought to be ashamed in the eyes of jesus he shows a failure of faith.

People who threaten others in this manner when it is such a serious accusation, make me wonder- what are they trying to hide?

Ever hear of the "thin skull' theory in law? In legal circles they decided it's the assaile ts fault for killing someone even if the victim has an unusually thin skull. The same rule needs to apply to victims of emotional and physical abuse. And yes, emotional abuse by sexual preditors. If they had issues before, you can bet the issues were far worse after the abuse.

Not to mention. I have never heard of sexual abuse making anyone better emotionally, pre-existing conditions or not.

This cardinal should be expelled, and the Catholic Church ashamed for allowing him to speak in it's name.
