Migrant children are getting sprayed with tear gas because of Donald Trump.
Migrant children are in cages because of Donald Trump.
Of course Donald isn't personally caging these children or spraying them with tear gas. Like every cowardly dictator, he orders other people to do his dirty work for him. He doesn't have to see the lives he's destroying up close. He doesn't have to look into the eyes of the children he's attacking with chemicals. He gets to sit on fancy furniture and eat big beautiful pieces of chocolate cake. He gets to play golf at his resort, Mar-a-Lago, and schmooze with fascists who give him large amounts of cash while his cult cheers him on--the cult that prides themselves as being pro-life.
Donald and his cult, which includes the Republican Party, will celebrate this holiday season with joy because their racist hatred is being realized. Brown children are being caged while others are being sprayed with a chemical weapon simply because their parents are seeking refuge in America.
From CNN: "As the migrants tried to cross the border, authorities on the US side used tear gas to disperse them, the journalists said. Video of the scene showed a cloud of tear gas that sent people running and screaming, including families with young children."
Photos of children crying because they've been hit with tear gas makes me feel sick to my stomach. How can this be happening? Aren't we supposed to be the melting pot? Wasn't that the point of this American experiment?
As I write this, I'm getting email alerts on my phone from a variety of retailers alerting me to all the sales and exciting offers for holiday shopping. Evidently the spirit of Christmas can be found at Macy's and Starbucks and Nordstrom and The Disney Store.
Children are being gassed.
I don't know how to feel happy or joyful. I don't know how I can find excitement for a holiday when America is becoming more and more like Nazi Germany. I've been advised by a number of people to not make that comparison, but gassing children crosses a major line.
I'm aware there have always been injustices and human suffering, and it's too easy for many of us to ignore the pain when we don't have to see it. This latest attack by Donald and his gang of white nationalists amplify all the injustices and I hope it becomes a catalyst for the nation. I hope we don't stay numb to what's already happened and I hope we don't become even more numb as we continue to watch innocent children being sprayed with tear gas.
My father is a Vietnam veteran and suffers from survivors guilt. While I'll never understand the depths of his specific guilt, I feel like enjoying myself in any way right now is a betrayal to asylum seekers who are looking to make a better life for their families.
This is the first time in decades that I've lived on the east coast and am able to celebrate the holidays with all of my family at once. This will mark the first Christmas I can spend with my mother and my father since I was three. I was looking forward to it, and now I'm feeling like I shouldn't enjoy anything. How can I feel good knowing there are children who've been separated from their parents and living in tent cities because Trump administration white supremacists are getting off on seeing innocent brown children in misery?
I'm not supposed to bring up Nazi Germany because it makes certain people uncomfortable, but...
"Children were especially vulnerable in the era of the Holocaust. The Nazis advocated killing children of “unwanted” or “dangerous” groups either as part of the “racial struggle” or as a measure of preventative security. The Germans and their collaborators killed children for these ideological reasons and in retaliation for real or alleged partisan attacks."
Sound familiar? I'm unable to ignore the parallels. There may not be gas chambers but what's the next step? How far will Donald go? I'm not interested in finding out but I have no choice.
This leads me to ask; what do we do about this? How do we stop this?
The only answer I have is voting, but Donald will be in charge for at least two more years and the GOP stands by him no matter what he does.
As I said in a tweet:
Donald will go lower.
He’ll always go lower.
He’s caging migrant children. He’s tear-gassing children who’s parents are seeking asylum. He’s selling off the country to foreign adversaries.
Does anyone believe this is his lowest point?
He’ll go lower.
Yeah, I know I'm being a downer, but decking the halls while innocent children are being sprayed with tear gas doesn't feel good or right.
We cannot and should not accept this as normal.
This is not who we are, but if we allow it to numb us, it is who we will be.
Oh, and Happy Holidays. Children are being gassed.
