What do you think of my list of "Rules for the Traditional moralists." and does anyone have anything to add?
.) DO NOT ALLOW THEM to ISOLATE YOU. - Either through turning friends against you, turning the organizational leadership against you, or through outright harassment, they can isolate you. Do not to try to engage with them and try to get them to see your point of view. The more energy you try to get the harassers to see your point of view, the less time you have to make new connections and friends.
.) DO NOT ASSUME THEY ARE ARGUING IN GOOD FAITH. - See if they listen and respond with empathy and kindness. If they seem to ognore you and keep to their own "Talking points". They are playing a game and see your side as evil or too ignorant to be listened to. You are beneath them in their mind.
.) ARGUE TO WIN OVER THE AUDIENCE NOT THE PERSON YOU ARE ARGUING WITH - This allows for both respectful and disrespectful arguments. If you start to win them over with arguments, do not ignore it be respectful and acknowledge their change. If they are engaging and real you can be the same. But do not think you will win the person over in front of you, win over the crowd.
.) BE SPECIFIC ABOUT WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT. - Your specificity forces the opposing side to try to argue more deeply and many people have formed external positions that are in direct opposition to internal moral positions. It also allows you to look less contradictive as you can explain why you're for the death penalty but pro-life when it comes to an abortion.
.) KNOW YOURSELF & ONLY ARGUE WHAT YOU BELIEVE. - Many argue over what another has said or the political group you belong to has said or believes, do not try to defend others beliefs that you are not strong about or believe yourself.
.) USE THEIR ARGUMENTS AGAINST THEM. - An argument about the compassion of welfare would be a good example. It is easy to say that you believe it is more compassionate to allow for human character growth and for their children to see that, then to feed people who could get fed on their own.
.) USE SPECIFIC LANGUAGE - Realize the words you use can be used against you if they are not chosen well. So try to learn how to turn a phrase in a way that is really difficult to misinterpet. Remember you are only caring if the undecided curious are hearing and siding with you. Not the person you are arguing with.
.) ADMIT WHEN YOU DO NOT KNOW AN ANSWER.
.) KNOCK DOWN STRAWMAN ARGUMENTS. -
.) KNOW HOW ALL OF YOUR IDEALS/IDEAS MAY LOOK LIKE THEY CREATE HYPOCRITICAL SITUATIONS AND BE READY TO REFUTE THAT.
.) DO NOT LET THEM TAKE COMPASSION AWAY FROM YOU. ARGUE THAT YOU ARE JUST AS COMPASSIONATE. AND SO ARE YOUR IDEAS.
.) LEARN HOW TO NOT BE RIGID, BE WILLING TO LEARN AND REALIZE WHERE YOU CAN BEND IN YOUR IDEAS/IDEALS TO EXPLAIN YOUR SIDE BETTER. AND WHY.
.) USE A REAL STORY AND REAL OUTCOMES/STATS/COMMON SENSE AS PROOF OF WHY YOU ARE RIGHT. - The best way to prove how right you are is with stats. But people also need a story to hang onto. And understand it can be compassionate to take away stuff given to people.
.) UNDERSTANDING HOW TO TALK TO PEOPLE ABOUT THE GOOD STAT, BAD STAT, DAMN STAT. LEARN HOW TO NOTICE THESE STATS QUICKLY.
