As we all probably could have seen coming, the conversation surrounding the Alexandria shooting has now turned to gun control. Although Hodgkinson had apparently had some runs in with the law, he was not a convicted felon and the guns used in the attack Wednesday were purchased legally. Of course, many believe that this attack is just the latest in a long line of shootings that should justify disarming, or at least limiting the arms, of the general population.
Personally, I believe that since Hodgkinson displayed no signs of mental health issues (which appears to be the case since nothing to the contrary has been reported so far) and was not a convicted felon, no gun control laws could have stopped this shooting that would not have also infringed upon the rights of law abiding citizens. As awful as the incident Wednesday was, the sad truth is that no measure could have stopped this without treating the entire population as if they were maniacs that might go on shooting sprees at any second.
Gun control is a sensitive issue, especially in the US, but in my opinion, the Constitution is extremely clear about what rights American citizens are entitled to.
