I know, I know, sharing a TYT video. Craziness right? But this is a really heartbreaking situation. Curious what other people think about this, because honestly I'm not sure how I would react if I were in this situation. I'm not sure the extent of this son's Peter Tefft's radicalization since I'm really not familiar with his story (is he just a white a nationalist or a white supremacist or a Nazi?), but I'd like to think that if anyone out there can show us the harms of prejudice and bigotry, it should be our families.

@lainsanderson do you have the link to the heavy article?

@RoamingMillennial Apparently he became radical in the last 15 months, according to his ex fiancé.(I saw that in a heavy.com article and I don't know if they're trustworthy). I also went on his twitter and he says he's a white civil rights activist. As to why he could have been attracted to this community because he was a loner and did not want to be part of the community he was raised in. Mabey he has a personality type that is drawn to radical groups. Also while families are very important for teaching good morals each individual has to accept them on their own accord. You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink.

@lbrindley @jakethesnake @Iainsanderson Ugh, I can't imagine being in this situation as a parent. It actually makes my heart hurt thinking about it. I hope Peter's reflecting on WHY his family has reacted so strongly.
Plus, it really makes me wonder about how these people have become radicalized in the first place. If it wasn't this guy's upbringing that indoctrinated him into white nationalism, then why is he identifying with it?

@RamsayBolton who hurt you?

People not questioning the narrative they're being spoon fed is what led to the rise of the Nazi's.

The people abusing this family are just as bad as the son, though the family may well be just as bad too.

It's reminiscent of a documentary I watched about a serial killer and his mother saying she knew one day her son would try to kill her and she'd be forced to kill him - based on nothing - what sort of mother would talk in such a way? The mother of a serial killer.

Their actions regarding their abusers has all the hallmarks of Stockholm Syndrome... But then they use an off colour joke to portray their son as being part of some coming genocide, not to mention portraying the actions of a few hundred people as being somehow comparable to the rise of the National Socialist Party... In all honesty the grandiosity and manipulation of these words and actions suggests they may well be virtue signalling narcissists - which would explain the direction their son is heading in.

I'd be inclined to say it's a pretty cowardly letter on multiple levels. How can they label these so-called white supremacists guilty by association for the actions of one person who was apparently mentally ill, and then complain when they themselves are labelled guilty by association? How can they publicly label their own son or brother a Nazi, almost certainly unfairly vilifying him, and not call out the hateful people who are are unfairly vilifying them, primarily for the actions of said mentally ill man with whom they have no connection.

I concur with Jake, it is acceptable to disown your child if they are a Nazi. It is a sad situation, but he did say in his public letter that he would welcome his son back, like the prodigal son from the bible, if he gives up his racist beliefs. I pray that he does and can be reconciled with his family. Here is a link to the letter.http://www.inforum.com/opinion/letters/4311880-letter-family-denounces-teffts-racist-rhetoric-and-actions

I agree, @jakethesnake. If the child is an overt Nazi, then the best thing the family can do is distance themselves from the child as much as possible. No easy answer, but I'm with the parents on this one.

As Cenk puts it in the video, if there is ever a time to disown your child, it would be when they're a Nazi (if that is indeed the case). Especially since the rest of their family is getting the backlash of his actions. Nevertheless it's a sad situation.
