Apparently, Twitter has been guessing people's genders based on their account interactions in order to deliver more targeted ads. Of course, this makes perfect sense for Twitter to do as a business, and the assigned gender is only for Twitter's internal system and is not displayed on your public profile, but - you guessed it! - some people are furious. According to Buzzfeed, being assigned a gender identity for the purpose of advertising can be "jarring and upsetting."
