Hey Roaming, controversial topic, what are your thoughts on spanking as a form of discipline for children?
I believe I have found the first topic RoMi and I actually disagree on! ha! I have 6 kids and I believe the occasional spanking is sometimes necessary. Now, I mean occasional and as a last resort. In fact, the unspoken threat of a spanking is far, far more beneficial than the actual spanking. What I mean by this is that, once a child has been spanked once, they understand what it is and they know that it is a possibility. It is extremely rare that I spank one of my children. 2 of them I have never spanked, they always listened, understood and obeyed when needed. And I have never spanked any of the others more than 3x each in their lives (that I can remember). I do give little (not painful) swats on the bottom when sending them to their rooms...but genuine spankings are extremely rare, but sometimes necessary. I never give a spanking out of anger, I allow for a 5-10 minute period between my anger and the act of spanking. Also, over 6-7 years old, spanking is no longer useful as removal of privileges has a greater impact. I agree with RoMi that talking to them and helping them understand is the best but there are moments when logic and words will not work on an angry, screaming, disobedient 5 year old.
I think it's unnecessary, children are people and if you want to punish them or explain what they did wrong, there's no reason why you can't just talk to them. Even young children benefit from being spoken to like adults, and overall I think children should not do bad things because they understand that they're bad and why they're bad, not because they're afraid of being spanked.
If you do a Youtube search on Stefan Molyneux Spanking, you'll get several videos he's done on the topic. He's against spanking, but he's no liberal.
personally, I think if you don't whoop the shit out of your kids on a regular basis, you don't love them
I find it interesting that the issue seems to be broadly divided into two camps - Liberals who believe it harms children and Conservatives that think it is neccessary
