Quote of the Day

Nothing good ever comes of love. What comes of love is always something better.
Roberto Bolaño, Amulet

Roberto Bolaño was a Chilean novelist, short-story writer, poet and essayist. I found this quote in November, after the election, when I was struggling to articulate why I couldn't, and we shouldn't, just vilify all the people that led to Donald Trump being elected President. Two days after the election, I told the crowd at Facing Race, the biennial conference my former employer hosts, that we needed to love up on Trump voters, non voters, Stein voters, Bernie voters. Ten months into this Administration, liberals and progressives are still flinging accusations and insults at each other. Because if we extend love (especially when none has been requested or reciprocated) we don't in fact know what's going to happen. But whatever it is, Bolaño assures us that it will be better, and I believe him.
