Minnesota Making Waves

2018 again proves itself as an important year for women in politics.

Today, Minnesota State Representative Ilhan Omar filed papers to run for Rep. Keith Ellison's vacated senate seat. Omar would be the first Somali American in Congress if she wins in November. Omar is a self-described intersectional feminist, Black Lives Matter advocate and is fighting to end child marriages in Minnesota.

State Rep. Erin Maye Quade was endorsed as Rep. Erin Murphy's running mate for Lt. Governor and Governor, respectively. Come November, Maye Quade, a Black community organizer, could be the first openly queer woman to hold statewide office in Minnesota. In April, Maye Quade led a 24-hour sit-in on the floor of the Minnesota House of Representatives to protest lawmaker's inaction on gun control.
