Would love to hear your thoughts about Oprah as president. Recently I’ve thought that we need a policy wonk plus an inspirational person. Obama was both. Voldemort is neither....

oops, hit return too fast. Queen Sugar is my favorite show and I'm grateful to Oprah for bringing it to me. I do think it takes a lot of different skills to govern, and I'm sure that Oprah has some of them, although having a constituency is really different from having an audience. However, I do not think we're in a normal period of political decisionmaking. I think that Oprah would win for the same reason Trump won -- because anyone who operates outside the two party system might deliver relief where Republicans and Democrats have not. I'm not saying this is a well-conceived position, just that it is real. Like Trump, Oprah would attract a natural base (i won't spell out 45's natural base here) who have an affinity for her, plus a lot of people who would know her name but still see her as outside of the system. If she did run, she'd have as good a chance at winning as anyone, and better than many. I don't think that's going to happen. I hope and trust that she will give money and actively campaign for the many excellent progressives running for office in the coming year.

Hi, I think the news cycle has moved on from debating this, which is probably good. Here's what I think about Oprah -- there isn't anyone else like her, not just now, but maybe ever. She's a media mogul who has done everything, as both the talent and the producer. She created her won platforms early and done with them exactly as she pleases. Queen Sugar, on the OWN, is my favorite channel.
