So did you want them to be the 51st state or to "stand on their own"? You seem a bit conflicted.

Puerto Ricans are citizens I know but this whole dynamic of a territory with no representation and can't even vote in elections is so complicated that making them totally separate from us and stand on their own feet instead of always hoping to be one day a state so they're prioritized is just an awful way to live. The gov has extended its help but always living like this way when there are other possibilities seems limiting. It's a poor territory though probably why. Why not let's just urge our gov to accept them as a state so we can focus on them too like Texas instead of always hearing them in the news ravaged and helpless.

Jeez dude, they're citizens of the US. They pay taxes. Why shouldn't they be lobbying and organizing to get help from their government? Imagine what an enormous media s**tshow it would be if Portland, ME got hit by a hurricane and had to wait 9 months until the power came back. If it happened to me I'd be marching in the damn street by week 6, at the latest. Puerto Rico using the power of their votes as a means to redress their grievances is EXACTLY what democracy is about.

Or they could eventually stop wishing to become the 51st state and stand as a country on their own. This smells desperation. Can't they stand on their own?
