Not really sure I see that letting a Russian and Iranian backed dictator consolidate his power (despite the efforts of US troops) is "progress for the region". Sure, less ISIS/DAESH is good, but this is not a case of "the enemy of my enemy is my friend". The enemy of our enemy in this case is just an enemy we haven't fought yet.
Also, it's worth mentioning that Syrians trying to get away from this war are still not allowed in the U.S. because of Trump's travel ban.
