Two Ways The Unaware Left Shows Its Hand

The Left's stance on two key issues may be its downfall in the Midterms

Once again, America’s Left has shown the cards its holding and it could come back to bite them hard in the 2018 Midterm Elections. The first is their objection to the Trump Administration requiring the 2020 Census to include a question about whether or not the respondent is an American citizen. The second is the resurgent gun control movement that was unleashed by the horrific shootings at a high school in Parkland Florida. It’s now clear that any hope for a bi-partisan compromise on undocumented immigration or gun control from the Left will never happen. They have telegraphed their true intent and in doing so show how far out of mainstream America they really are.

The 2020 Census

Early in the week, it was reported that Donald Trump’s Commerce Secretary, Wilbur Ross indicated that the 2020 Census would ask American households about their citizenship status, for the first time since the 1950 Census. In response, at least 12 states (mostly large Democrat-dominated states, with large undocumented immigrant populations) sued the federal government to stop this question being added to the census form.

Why the visceral reaction? Well, it’s all about votes and $675 Billion of federal aid and maybe the apportionment of congressional seats in the House of Representatives, oh and electoral votes.

It has ever been thus since the U.S. Census was authorized by The Constitution. The first tally of the population was done in 1790. It famously included the repugnant count of slaves who were included in the population as three-fifths of a white man. This being a compromise between the free states and the slave states that allowed the United States to happen in the first place.

And population matters a lot when it comes to government. In the current math, there are 535 electoral votes in the Electoral College that elects our Presidents (with apologies to Hillary Clinton supporters). There are 100 Senators (2 from each state) and 435 Representatives in The House whose numbers are apportioned by state population as determined by the U.S. Census.

Ironically, this Electoral College elected Donald Trump and he and his supporters want to see something done about unlawful immigration. The Left fears that this will cause an enormous undercount in states like California, which have a massive Democrat majority. This perhaps could cost them Congressional districts and votes and Electoral College votes along with some portion of federal monies. The Left is apoplectic.

Republicans have long maintained that Democrats only care about their voting rolls and the power it brings them. This is why the Left has befriended the immigrant population, particularly the unlawful ones. Democrats have created sanctuary cities and states to protect unlawful immigration. And the R's might have a valid point.

Already, the Democrats swift, knee-jerk reaction on this census question, where they maintain that the citizenship question that the citizenship question is all about Trump and the Right's racism. The Left’s reaction has left them exposed on the issue of illegal immigration and their real intentions are clear; their support of undocumented immigrants is a cynical grab for votes and Electoral College power by Democrats.

Bear in mind that the majority of Americans want something done about securing our borders.

Gun Control Post Parkland

Also this week, the veil was lifted on the Left’s so-called “gun control” argument in the wake of the killings in Parkland Florida. Yes, we’ve been going through weeks of pummeling by the Left’s media arm in their glorification of David Hogg and the kids from Parkland who have been allowed to vilify the NRA and call their members killers with blood on their hands.

The media has also been pushing for all kinds of compromise on guns and many on the right have considered meeting the Left half way. But then came the comments by retired Supreme Court Justice Stevens who came out for repealing the Second Amendment last week.

The Right, gun-owners and advocates for the Second Amendment were vindicated immediately for their distrust of the gun control issue. Following Stevens comments, one of our Contributors and my friend, Paul Aloe wrote a great article last week about the Second Amendment and it contained some interesting points on why a compromise is possible on guns that seemed very reasonable to me. You should take a look at it if you haven’t already done so.

But read all the way to the end and you’ll see that Aloe couldn’t fully advocate for the Second Amendment. He simply said he’d “reserve judgment” until he saw the results of new gun control measures.

Uh Oh.

You see the Right and gun-owners have been hounded to compromise. Gun advocates have argued quite reasonably, that the Parkland shooting and many others of its kind had little to do with new gun laws and everything to do with enforcing the ones we already have - effectively. That also means that our authorities have a duty to heed the warning signs that are already out there about the perpetrators of these heinous acts. But the Left wants our guns and nothing else will do.

Why would someone who believes in gun rights ever vote for a Democrat? The Country is not ready for an Australian - style confiscation. It's not happening.

With the Midterm Congressional elections looming in the shadow of these revelations by the Left, The Democrats have shown their hand. They are not willing to move to the center. This election may not be a referendum on Donald Trump after all.

What would save the Democrats? If they can find someone charismatic like Obama and no holds barred like Trump.

Yeah the Democrat position is not super strong at the moment. THe media does not do a good job in promoting the right content . So while a discussion on mass violence and gun violence is appropriate, they champion spats between children and adults. Also the Census thing is a big of a lose lose. Can't really advocate for the rights of illegals /non citizens. Not really our problem, but they do .

But when I read "there are 535 electoral votes in the Electoral College that elects our Presidents (with apologies to Hillary Clinton supporters)", I almost couldn't make it any further... hahaha!

Great thoughts here Jon! Many of them I have had myself! I have a feeling the MSM will write this mid-term election off as a huge upset for the GOP, but between Hillary continuing to ostracize the conservatives on a near-daily basis and the other liberal figures showing their hands, it could be a different story once all the votes are counted.
