A majority of Americans approve of newly empowered House Democrats using their authority to investigate President Donald Trump, but many are worried about possible congressional overreach as a result of the probes, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll.
The poll, published Sunday, showed that 57 percent of respondents support Democratic investigations into potential collusion between Trump’s 2016 campaign and Russia; 61 percent support investigations of suspected financial ties between Trump and foreign governments; 59 percent support investigations into Trump’s communications and relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin; 60 percent support attempts to obtain and release Trump’s tax returns.
However, 46 percent of respondents suspect Democrats will “go too far” in their efforts, while 34 percent think the lawmakers will handle the inquiries “about right.” A majority of respondents, 55 percent, said they do not think Congress should begin impeachment proceedings against the president.
