Young Somali sisters die after FGM

Heartbreaking news of more deaths of young girls after undergoing female genital mutilation (FGM). Doctors and human rights activists in Somalia reported the deaths of two sisters aged 10 and 11 who had been taken over the border to neighbouring Ethiopia for FGM but then died after returning to their village.

Dr Mohammed Hussein Aden who spoke to relatives who tried to save the sisters said that these girls are amongst five known deaths from FGM in the last month. Somalia has one of the highest levels of FGM and Dr Aden fears that many more medical emergencies and deaths arising from FGM are not unreported.
