Tribute to anti-FGM campaigner Efua Dorkenoo
The contribution of celebrated women's rights activist Efua Dorkenoo who sadly passed away in 2014 has been recognised by the Oxford Dictionary of Biography. For many years, Efua was a much loved friend and mentor to Magool founder Leyla Hussein and many other young activists campaigning to end female genital mutilation (FGM).
Efua pioneered the global movement to end FGM and strongly advocated for the rights of survivors. She was tireless in her work against FGM and helped change attitudes in addressing FGM as a human rights as well as health issue. Efua created the platform for much of the progress we see today.
