Loujain Al-Hathloul named in TIME100

Recognition for imprisoned Saudi women's rights activist

Loujain Al-Hathloul is a prominent women's rights activist who has been a leader in the fight for women to be able to drive and against the male guardianship system in Saudi Arabia. Along with other campaigners she was arrested in June 2017 and since been political prisoner. According to human rights organisations including Amnesty International, Loujain and other women have subjected to torture including sexual assault, waterboarding and electrocution whilst in detention.

Loujain's inclusion in the TIME100 list is important recognition for all the women's rights activists in Saudi Arabia. It is vital that sustained international pressure is applied to the Saudi government for their immediate release from prison and protection from further persecution.
