Leyla Hussein receives honorary doctorate

In recognition of her work as one the world’s leading activists against female genital mutilation (FGM), Leyla Hussein was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of West London (UWL). Leyla attended the University from 2006 to 2010 to study counselling and become a qualified psychotherapist. After graduating she established the world’s first specialist counselling service for survivors of FGM and she is a leader in the global movement to end this harmful practice.

On learning of the aware Leyla commented, “I was very surprised when I heard of this very special recognition from UWL and I am also truly honoured. The only person who is more pleased is my very proud mother! UWL is such a special place for me and has enabled me to fulfil my dream of setting up counselling services for FGM survivors. UWL and the amazing staff there have always supported me and I regularly return to share my work with current students. I am looking forward to our continued work together.”
