During the 2011 Arab Spring protests, Aayat Alqormozi recited her poetry to peacefully protest the Bahraini government. For this, she was expelled from university, arrested, and jailed. Released from prison, Aayat continues to speak out against the government's abuse. She says that three things are necessary to aid people like her in Bahrain: education, creativity in peaceful protest, and international support. Aayat received the Václav Havel International Prize for Creative Dissent in 2017 and accepted her award at the Oslo Freedom Forum.
