1. Milagro means… Milagro means “miracle.” The very concept of a miracle implies a distinction between the natural and the supernatural. The term miracle is also used in non-theological contexts: ‘the miracle of birth’. Whichever way we choose to use the term, children are little miracles, wouldn’t yousay?
ad you to create a foundation and why did you name it ‘milagro’?
Since the Sixties during the consciousness revolution, we were doing benefits in San Francisco and since then helping people in need all over the world. We realized that we could not help everyone, no matter how noble or just the cause was, but we wanted to be of service to life, people and the planet. We decided that helping children was going to have an incredible impact on our future. So the focus of the Milagro Foundation is to support children around the world in the fields of health, education and the arts.
Milagro means miracle and we believe that children are miracles in our lives and hold the key to bettering our world.
2. “Love Grows Kids”
At a recent *Child Permanency Symposium, I heard someone say “Love grows kids”. Indeed, there is nothing but love to guide and protect our children.
As I know this statement resonates with who you are, would you please share your thoughts on love and how loving our children affects their entire life?
When I was a child, we did not have the tools and skills that parents have today but we did have love. The love between my parents and among my brothers and sisters is what carried us through the hard times. That love is what made me who I am today. I truly believe that each child’s soul is the seed that contains light and love. By investing patience, compassion, kindness and gentle wisdom, each child will bear the fruit of divinity.
3. Promoting Health, Education, Creativity
Babies brains are amazing powerhouses that grow in response to creative environments – and in early brain development, there is a firestorm of creativity. Hence this is a reason why promoting health, education and creativity is essential.
Your global efforts to offerhealth care and education – including arts - around theglobe is remarkable. What have been your most important and rewarding efforts thus far?
Having a child come up to me and say that because of you, I am the first in my family to go to college means more to me that all the Grammys in the world. Building a medical clinic in my hometown of Autlan, Mexico for families to have access to health care, nutrition guidance and mental health services is one of our most rewarding efforts as well. This year we plan to focus some of our efforts on teenage suicide on Native American Reservations, which is a very big problem and needs attention. We also are sending “energy” to help in Nepal and in the refugee camps in Syria.
When I think of all the blessings in my life, my family, my music… I am so grateful to play my music and share my music, but I started realizing that I get more joy helping children than I do being number one on the radio. There can be no greater reward then to be of service to those in need.
4. Music and Magic
We would agree that music is utterly powerful and brings people and nations together. In your opinion, would helping more children explore music and potentially become musicians help create social changes?
Absolutely! I see it every night we are blessed to perform for people. Through Milagro, we believe that any way that we can break the cycle of poverty for children and families is critical. If a child explores and embraces music, art or anything that opens their creative mind… that is an incredible way for them to build their confidence which will give them the skills to lead them to a more successful life. As a child, music transported me out of my own situation into a world of positive vibrations and life changes. In the Sixties, music was the platform for social change with the freedom movement and Martin Luther King. We still believe in the power of music to bring people together. Everyone has the universal tone within them.
5. A Man With A Cause:
The future of the Milagro Foundationand its mission
How will the Milagro Foundation continue to create a space for young children in which they can pursue their dreams and creative visions? (ex: its growth, future)
Synergy creates energy. For me, it's important to utilize the energy that people give to me. Some call it money – I call it 'energy' – and share it with the children all over the world. This energy allows us to open our hearts to so many in need. As Milagro continues to grow and help children around the world, we hope to convey the message that everyone is significant and meaningful and that they matter. Once you believe you are a beam of light that comes from the mind of God, you will carry yourself differently.
6. The Global Lead
What would you like to tell our readers to inspire them to ‘get involved’?
As I stated before, you are significant, you are meaningful, you matter, and you can make a difference in the world. There is no greater reward than working from your heart and making a difference in the world. I invite you to look in the mirror and say, ‘I matter… I am not a victim.’ Don’t ever think like a victim. It’s boring, and it’s crowded. God gave you a universe of possibilities.
