#50SimpleThings Tip #23: Turn off lights when not needed, especially during the day!

A super simple but great way to lessen your impact on the earth is turning off your lights when you leave a room and your house!

Did you know, the average American's lighting bill costs about of $50 dollars a month per household? That may not seem like much, until you think about the fact that an average household is spending approximately $600 on just their lights every year! That doesn’t include the cost of running water, air conditioning, internet, and gas, as well as many others expenses. All together, that winds up being about $3840 per year on bills, with approximately 6.4% of that spent on your electricity bills! Leaving the lights on also wastes a lot of energy so by turning off your light, you are able to cut your carbon footprint and impact on the environment!

There are several ways of decreasing the price of your electricity bill but one of the easiest is to turn off the lights when you leave a room! That sounds so simple, yet so many people use their lights when they don’t need to. This can be a great chance to be mindful about what electricity you use that you don’t need. Not only will you be saving money on your electricity bill, but you’ll also be saving by buying less light bulbs. Turning off your lights prevents the rapid burnout that wastes so many bulbs. The best thing to do is to turn off the lights when you leave the room as well as when you leave the house!

During the day, utilize the natural light outside, instead of the wasteful energy that comes with turning on your lights. Using natural lighting is not only only better for the environment, but also your wallet, mind, body and spirit too! So go ahead and make a make a difference, one small step at a time.
