What’s the mission of your organization, and how does it relate to issues in ocean conservation?
The Global Lead is a digital web channel promoting education, advocacy and activism to encourage and create positive social and environmental changes. Our mission is to provide our global audience with the necessary knowledge and tools to actively engage and to realize the importance of their support, their signature, and their voice.
As many urgent ocean conservation issues continue to rise, we are deeply committed and devoted to write, publish, ands share articles and videos about important initiatives. We have partnered with organizations such as yours – The TerraMar Project – as well as Oceana, Mission Blue, Sea Shepherd Global and Captain Paul Watson. Additional Ocean Conservancy Organizations are in the process of joining The Global Lead.
What made you want to pursue a career related to spreading awareness of social and environmental issues? And do you still have the same motivations today as when you first began?
My journey into the world of humanitarian and environmental causes began16 years ago when I first read an article about 10,000 Somalia refugees coming to America. I then called the Washington State Department and asked “How Can I Help!?” – a question that changed my life. I volunteered to help refugees resettle in the Los Angeles area and learned a whole lot about other cultures, courage, resilience and hope.
A few years later, I toured China for three weeks and did not see the sun – except for the last three days in Beijing – during the entire trip due to extreme pollution. I was deeply shocked and saddened to witness such pollution and destruction of our planet. I decided to ‘get involved’ and called Al Gore’s team to sign up for the ‘Inconvenient Truth’ training. I then launched ‘The Malibu Global Warming Group’. This allowed me to not only learn about climate change and the environment, but to meet environmental scientists, advocates and activists who inspired me to write a book called: Why Is The Sky Blue?, a scientific book with an environmental message used today in classrooms and sold in scientific museums.
My motivations have heightened. Time is of the essence and this is a daily battle. My horizons continue to expand and I am thankful to be navigating amongst the most inspiring people and organizations from around the world!
It has inspired me to create ‘The Global Lead’, a global and digital activism platform. My goal is to inspire and empower people to engage with a cause.
What’s the connection, in your experience, between social justice and the marine environment?
Social justice and marine environments are interconnected because without our oceans, there is no ‘us’. We won’t survive if our oceans are filled with waste and plastic debris. We all benefit from having a healthy ocean. Therefore, we must care and protect it.
What do you think is the most serious issue facing our world’s ocean today and why?
The oceans are the biggest resource for life on earth, yet at the same time our biggest dumping ground. Pollution, climate change, overfishing, invasive species, and habitat loss are all extremely serious issues. Overfishing is draining life from the water. Ocean acidification is no small issue. The basic science behind acidification is that the ocean absorbs CO2 through natural processes, but at the rate at which we’re pumping it into the atmosphere through burning fossil fuels, the ocean’s pH balance is dropping to the point where life within the ocean is having trouble coping.
I am hopeful, simply because I do know of the extreme efforts and global initiatives taken by worldwide organizations, millennials, experts, leaders, tech companies AND “countries” taking the lead.
How do you think social media and platforms such as The Global Lead have the potential to reach audiences in a way that traditional scientific communication can’t? And do you think it is actually making a difference in the way people perceive our world’s oceans?
In such a short time, we have created a coalition of remarkable content partners who are all devoted to publishing, informing, empowering and educating our global audience. We provide the platform, the tools and the technology to ‘share’ not only on our channel, but on social media. As we all have a rather large presence and audience on social media, each shared content can spread quickly and efficiently.
I do believe we have an impact in the way people ‘understand’ our oceans. In the past years, we have published many articles via our PERREAULT Magazine (and will continue to do so via our new Channel). You may access two of our magazine issues that had a tremendous impact on our audience here:
What’s one everyday thing that you think normal people could do better to conserve the marine environment?
Reducing our plastic consumption is one top of the list. It is an easy thing to do as well. For example: NO STRAWS. Plastic is a substance the earth and our oceans cannot digest.Refuse single-use plastic. Reach out to restaurant owners and suggest they give a plastic straw upon request. Keep on recycling and share your knowledge! On a larger scale, let’s STOP all offshore drilling.
