China’s Fossil Fuel Deadline Shifts Focus to Electric Car Race

The world’s second largest economy will phase out vehicles using gasoline and diesel.

China is the latest country to join an ambitious movement to phase out fossil-fuel-powered vehicles, reports Bloomberg News. The country will set a deadline for automakers to end the sales of vehicles using gasoline and diesel; a move that will accelerate the electric car market.

A looming ban will push local and global automakers to introduce more zero-emission electric cars to improve air quality in smog-filled cities. Countries such as the U.K., France and Scotland have introduced similar vehicle bans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
