Catastrophic: The oceans are warming faster than scientists thought
The world’s oceans reached the warmest temperatures on record in 2018, and are warming 40 percent faster than scientists previously expected, according to a new study in the journal Science.
The study says climate change is increasing ocean temperatures, and could bring about more intense winters in the northern hemisphere, accelerate dangerous coastal flooding, and create stronger natural disasters. The warming temperatures are also harming marine life and coral reefs.
“Global warming is here, and has major consequences already. There is no doubt, none!” the authors of the study said in a statement.
A U.S. government study released in November 2018, found that the consequences of climate change could cost the United States hundreds of billions of dollars and thousands of lives by the end of the century, due to increased environmental disasters.
