House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other top Democrats are expected to bring a resolution condemning anti-Semitism to a House vote this week in a direct rebuke of recent comments by Minnesota Congressmember Ilhan Omar questioning the U.S.’s relationship with Israel. After facing criticism, the Democratic leadership added language in the resolution condemning anti-Muslim bias, as well. We speak to Rep. Pramila Jayapal, who says, “I just want to make sure that we are protecting the right for the first Muslim woman to be in Congress and to question, legitimately, foreign policy toward Israel.”

This region has committed the classic mistake of putting all its eggs into one or two baskets - coal, railroads - and then being too slow to find other baskets when those break down - solar and wind, high speed rail. There are highly skilled, motivated workers in this area who could be easily trained for green energy and transportation jobs, but the coal companies and other powers that be have more to gain by pumping them full of lies about the Democrats "dissing" coal and by extension, coal mining families. They would rather blindly follow these liars than try to look at the bigger picture and improve their lot in life. This region could be a prime location for solar and wind farms, and its proximity to Cincinnati, D.C., and other areas make it an ideal east coast hub for high-speed rail - all doable, all profitable, all sustainable, but not wanted by the big-money interests that have strangled this area for years. This is a struggle a couple of centuries in the making, but Appalachia needs answers quickly, and they need leaders who can present, accept, recognize, and implement good ideas.
